Park Mi-Jin

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the differences in types of social activities according to older adults` socioeconomic level as well as how patterns of social activities affect older adults` depressive symptoms. The analysis used data from 4,155 people in the fifth year (2015) of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging(KOLSA) data. The analytical methods used included latent class analysis and multiple regression analysis. The main results of this study are as follows. First, differences and similarities were identified in the types of social activities among the poor and non-poor groups. The elderly poverty group was typified as a alumni-friendship centered group, a religion-friendship centered group, a friendship-oriented group, and a inactivity group. The social activities of the elderly non-poverty group were classified as a inactivity group, a friendshipeconomic activity group, a alumni-friendship centered group, and a complex activity group. Second, the inactivity group showed a higher level of depressive symptoms for both the poor and non-poor groups. The results of this study showed the relationship between socioeconomic level and typologies of social activities late in life and the typologies of social activities also affected depressive symptoms. According to the results, social work practice needs to promote the social activities of elderly people in poverty. Implications were suggested regarding intervention for older adults` social activities considering the relationship with depression, and suggestions for future research were offered.
